Bariatric Surgery Criteria
Criteria and Pre-Operative Requirements
- BMI (body mass index) greater than or equal to 40.
- BMI greater than 35 with other major co-morbidities (medical problems such as diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea and hypertension)
- Age greater than 18.
- History of documented repeated failure of non-surgical weight loss attempts.
- Candidate must have realistic expectations, be motivated and able to conform to the strict post op dietary and exercise recommendations, and demonstrate a commitment to succeed by attending all scheduled appointments
During the Dr Leger's Bariatric Surgery Program:
Patients will be given clear and understandable informations about:
- the recognized risks of the procedure,
- the post-operative diet required, psychological cares and physical & sport activity after surgery
- weight loss to be expected
- Patients will have a clear consent discussion with the surgeon before surgery and the discussion will be documented. Patients can be sure that the Dr Leger is aware of recognized clinical protocols and is adequately trained and experienced to undertake bariatric surgery. The surgical team will include staff with relevant experience and expertise. Patients will get informations about what to expect in terms of the recovery time and process, what problems may occur and what to do if they have any difficulties. Patients's home physicians will be kept informed.
- Patients will have to complete a pre operative program at home before coming including: Endocrinologists, Gastroenterologists, Psychiatrist & Lung specialists.
- Patients will have to complete a pre operative program in Noumea shortly before surgery including: consultations with the local Bariatric Surgeon the Dr Leger, Anesthetist, multidisciplinary team (Psychologist-Physiologist-dietician). It is require that each patient will follow a pre-op weight loss diet to reduce the complications of surgery but also to demontrate ability and commitment to make dietary and exercise changes.
